I’ve been thinking and noticing my literary side, as well as that of those around me a lot more lately and felt I had to share this tidbit of awesomeness.
Although The Kiddo has always loved reading and being read to, he has been reading more on his own lately and I can’t express enough just how excited I am about this.
Last week, he started reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw. After decorating the Christmas tree with Nate the other night, he wanted to read instead of listen to music. Nate gave him his book and a flashlight and put him to bed around 9pm. At 10:30pm, Nate had to confiscate the book and flashlight and make Kiddo go to sleep.
The next morning, Nate woke Kiddo and told him to get ready for school. Nate went in the other room and when he returned, Kiddo was laying on the living room floor, still in his pajamas, reading his book.
Sounds like something I did as a kid. Or last week.
Sunday, I took Kiddo Christmas shopping and let him pick out a new book. I just can’t help myself; I’m such a bookworm that I feel a responsibility to make sure he has enjoyable books to read. Books have always been a treasure to me and I’m hoping he will grow up feeling the same way. Anyway, he picked out Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. I’m not going to lie. I’m a little disappointed that he isn’t reading them in order, but at least he plans on reading the entire series. I bought him another one from the series for Christmas, but don’t tell!
At the cash register, the cashier was chatting with Kiddo and asking if the book was his. He said yes and told her all about how he had just finished Last Straw and it was such a good book. The whole exchange was adorable and I’m so proud of him.
For me, the life-long love affair with books and reading started as soon as I could sit and listen to my mom. It looks like Nate has done a terrific job of making this the case for the Kiddo as well.Readingbefore bed is an almost nightly occurrence at Nate’s house.
In fact, this weekend while Kiddo was reading his book via flashlight in his bedroom, Nate was reading via the Kindle app on his Blackberry and I was reading my Kindle. When he went to confiscate the flashlight and book from Kiddo, he told him that we were all reading at the same time. Kiddo thought that was pretty cool and so do I.
